4x4 notation is based on 3x3 notation. The normal 3x3 moves U D R L F B M S E. are the same outer layer turn on the 4x4. A lowercase letter such as r or u means that you move the inner layer of that side. For example a r' move means that you move the inner right layer in the same direction as R', so down. M, S, and E moves are never written.
